History of the Hudson Valley
The first Europeans to sail up this magnificent waterway were led by Henry Hudson in 1609 on his ship the Halfmoon. While they did not find the passage to India they were looking for, these explorers did chart an area which would become crucial to the foundation of the American nation. With a war brewing between England and the Colonies, the Americans decided to fortify the lower Hudson to ensure that commerce between New England and the mid-Atlantic states would continue throughout the war.
