Now both principals in the JDL terror bombing plot are dead -- were they killed for what they knew? by M. P. Shiel JEWISH DEFENSE LEAGUE (JDL) leader Earl Krugel, 62, convicted and imprisoned for his involvement in a terror bombing plot against a mosque and the office of a U.S. Congressman of Lebanese ancestry, was killed yesterday at a federal prison in Phoenix, Arizona, according to the FBI. Krugel (pictured) was killed Friday evening at the Federal Correctional Institution in the southwestern city, where he had only been living for three days. A murder investigation has begun, but few details are being released by authorities. Krugel's wife, Lola, who has insisted that her husband's guilty plea in the terror bombing trial was the result of "poor legal representation" and the "treachery" of Krugel's former JDL colleague Irv Rubin (who was also charged in the terror plot trial), said the FBI told her an inmate had killed her husband by striking him with a cement block on the head. In 2001, Krugel and Rubin were arrested and charged with planning a terror bombing of the King Fahd Mosque in Culver City, CA and the local office of Republican Rep. Darrell E. Issa. Krugel pled guilty and was sentenced two years ago to 20 years in prison. While in prison awaiting trial in 2002, Rubin allegedly cut his throat with a small safety razor and then jumped off a 20 foot balcony. Some believe that the death was not a suicide.
